A whole new chapter

Your life is like a book. Each new experience that you encounter is a new chapter. You can go through your childhood as one, teenage years as another, through to College and so on. Getting ready to come to San Francisco on exchange seemed like I was just adding to my university chapter, because I was simply going to another country to study. I was quite calm and excited to leave.

However it wasn’t until I said my final goodbyes to my family and friends that I realised this was more than just a study trip. It was a whole new adventure, one that would change the person I am, teach me things about the world I never thought I knew before. When I was leaving and crying saying goodbye, my dad said to me ‘it may seem like you’re a little girl in this huge city, but really, you’re a big girl in a tiny city, and the world is your oyster’. And I think that advice is something that should be passed on to anyone embarking on a new adventure in their lives. While it may not be easy at the start, we need to constantly remind ourselves that there is so much more to see in the world than just where we live. And exploring it does wonders for our minds, emotions and physical self.

My name is Mariah and I’m from Australia. I’m 21 years old and I study law and political science. My dream is to make a difference in this world, just like this world (and San Francisco) has made a difference in my life.
