My last advice to international and exchange students, and anyone new to San Francisco would be to go hang out at Dolores park. After 5 months living here I can honestly say that this really is one of my favorite place in the whole city. There is a very unique atmosphere in this park and a very particular charm. Plus there is a beautiful view from the top of the hill. Also, this is where I met most of my closest friends this semester. If there is an event there during orientation week you should definitely go. You will be able to observe all sort of persons doing all sorts of activity and this conveys a perfect atmosphere to bound with new people.
