IEEC – 2/12

Although the IEEC originally appeared to me as being more of a diversity showcase than a genuine student body, it is actually a fantastic way to meet people from all over the world and make friends with those who are in the same boat as you. At orientation, you will be assigned an IEEC commitment – a weekly assignment that will bring you together with other international students to help ‘internationalise’ the campus. Push past the initial feeling of it all being a bit forced, and you will meet some of your new best friends for the year. I can’t emphasise that enough. Making friends from all over the world really is an eye-opening experience and it also means you can visit them in their home country in the future. Having these international connections will open up your world and, although it is tempting to stick with people from your own country, try and get the most out of what the IEEC has to offer – the students themselves.
Therefore try and attend as many of the IEEC organized social events as possible (every Thursday night in our case) and form a sports team – our football (soccer) team had English, Dutch, Swedish, German, Spanish, French… the list goes on, and I was really glad to have made close international friends as a result of engaging with the IEEC.
