Journey to the West Part 2: Austin, TX

Slowly making our way from New Orleans back to San Francisco our next stop was Austin, TX.

As the state capital, Austin is the center of Texan politics. The state capitol was built in the late 19th century and has a beautiful architecture. They offer multiple free tours through the building and you will learn a lot about Texan history as well as how state legislatures work. When you’re there, make sure to spot as many stars as possible. Texas LOVES it stars! The lone-star state is really proud of its origins and its special standing within the United States. And they let you feel it :)

Although Austin is in the heart of Texas, it has a very different vibe that the rest of the state. It is a much more modern city with many cultural hot spots and sights to visit. One of the more relaxed places is the Barton Springs Pool. It is an outdoor swimming pool that was extended upon an existing natural spring. On a sunny day people from all walks of life come together at the springs and enjoy its beauty and the refreshing water.

Another spot to check out is the Congress Avenue bridge. Yes, a bridge. And it is not as boring as it first sounds. But the bridge is not special because of great architecture but because of the millions of bats living underneath! When the sun goes down, the whole bat population comes out in a spectacle that lasts for about 20-30 minutes. Depending on where you stand you might see individual bats or you might just see a giant black cloud moving in perfect harmony.
