My view on equality

I had never faced the issue of racism until I came to the U.S. Here I experienced and observed it a lot. It triggered me to think about new ways of dealing with it.

As an International Business major busy with Human Resource Management and Change Management, I do not believe in the structural change. I believe in the cultural change instead. It applies to everything including racial inequality.  I think that changing the legislation, which ensures political and economic rights for everyone, is not enough since the change takes place only in the system and does not go further than that while racism is in people and it will inevitably find other forms which cannot be covered by legislation. The change in the mindsets of people should take place parallel to the structural change.

Bellow I present three points that I believe can address the issue from a point of view of a young person and a student of the 21st century:

  1. New generations

Younger generation are the ones who can drive and bring a real change to the society since they are not biased by old ways and have an open mind towards new ways. Social changes have to do a lot with time. Being raised in an ex-socialist country, I know that it takes a few generations to transform the society. I think it is important to plant a seed of equality in younger generations.

  1. Education

I believe that education can play an important role in this. Instead of focusing on giving knowledge to students about what is bad or good, educational institutions should focus on training their attitudes. With the technological advancement the knowledge started to play a less important role while the “people” attitude has become crucial. I think the educational system has to evolve and change from classroom settings towards more interactive settings aimed at working on things in diverse groups, training personal awareness, interpersonal communication, intercultural sensitivity and ethical responsibility. That would develop morality and a “people” attitude in younger people regardless their race and nationality.

  1. Business

With the increased consumption, business has become really integrated into the society over the past decades and has a lot of impact on it nowadays. It is possible that business will change from a money-making machine into value-driven system in the coming years with the change in the mindset of its employees and management. It is, of course, related to the previous points where I talked about the key role of younger generations and the importance of education transformation. Those are the factors that would “feed” the business transformation.
