The Magic of Theatre

Perhaps, for me, the most impressive thing about SF State is the theatre department.

Back at my home school I was vaguely impressed that us drama students had our own building, a studio theatre, a small costume/prop shop and a whole bunch of rehearsal space. Trust me, when I go home it’ll be a downgrade.

Here the facilities are incredible. I never want to leave that creative arts building. There’s the McKenna Theatre, The Little Theatre (bigger than I expected), our black box theatre, dance studios, rehearsal spaces, a very reasonable sized costume shop… the list is seemingly endless. And the kind of training these students get throughout their degree is so well rounded I am envious.

I just feel incredibly lucky to have been able to take a class this semester that allows me to immerse myself in this fantastic department. My spring break is dedicated to learning lines as I prepare for 3 shows post-break. In the space of a month I will play a clumsy lesbian, a pregnant mistress who has not had sex in almost a year and a whole bunch of crazy, eclectic European characters.

To say I have my work cut out for me is a complete understatement. However, when you’re surrounded by such talent and passion it’s very difficult to be anything but excited for these wonderful opportunities.
