24 Hours in San Francisco

Term is coming to a close and for many of us that means going home, either just for Christmas or because study abroad is coming to an end. So, to help you make the most of the city (and not take up too much time around finals and hell week) here’s my guide to feeling festive in just 24 hours!

Brunch

Start off your day with a brunch. There are loads of places around the city, which vary in price, but by combining two meals into one you save money anyway. Some of my favourites are Mel’s Diner, if you want a true American experience, Dubose Park Café or Kitchen Story.

Christmas Shopping

After you’ve been energized from your brunch, head downtown for Christmas shopping. From up town brands, to smaller shops for little gifts, there is a huge amount of choice. Also, be sure to check out shops that you might not have at home for really individual gifts! Also keep in mind how heavy your bag may get on the flight home and the fact crowds in the city get bigger closer to Christmas as people start to panic buy! Top tip: Make a list so you don’t start buying random things and forget someone important.

Fisherman’s Wharf

Pier 39 is currently decked out in Christmas lights and looks lovely. You can also find a load of touristy shops if you want to get presents for your friends and family back home, or something to remember your time in the City. As it gets colder, there are also more sea lions packed in at the end of the pier. This is one of my favourite places in the city and they sea lions are so relaxing if finals are getting too much!

Museum of Ice Cream

The Museum of Ice Cream is currently running a special event on a Thursday night for people who come alone to help spread Christmas cheer to those who might not have family, so if you’re feeling lonely this festive season, this is an amazing opportunity. The first 350 people who come alone get in for free. I went in a small group and waited around an hour but still got in for free and saved $40. They give you ice cream and candy floss inside, so prepare for a sugar high as well as some group Christmas activities. You can attend at other times but will have to pay for the ticket, but it’s worth it! If you contact them via email, a student discount code is available too. Top tip: Be ready to find sprinkles for days after and wear your best outfit for lots of amazing photos!

Finish the day with Ice Skating

If the California weather hasn’t got you in the festive mood, ice skating definitely will! There are multiple locations around the city, but Union Square at night feels extra festive with the huge Christmas tree, the palm trees wrapped in lights and the Menorah. There’s also a Starbucks on every corner if you need to warm up post skate, and the Christmas menu is really nice! Top tip: check out Facebook or have a quick google to find tickets for skating and book in advance for the late-night sessions as they usually fill up pretty quickly.

Make sure to take your SFSU card to get on the muni, as you’ll be going all over the city.

Let me know if you’ve tried any of these or what you’d add!
