Eat your heart out

Eating in San Francisco has seriously taken a toll on my savings. Just kidding, but not really. Before going here I really didn’t anticipate me spending so much money on food, because I am usually quite frugal with my money, but I have definitely done that here, and I think there are a couple of reasons why.

First of all, produce is really expensive here. A lof of the stuff in super markets here is expensive, but buying fresh fruits and vegetables is especially draining on the valet. Back home I eat a ton of fruits and veggies so in the beginning I was spending so much money here.

Eventually, I started changing my diet into eating more pasta and rice because it was cheaper, but I really did not expect produce to be so expensive in sunny California. Second of all, a lot of food is bought to be eaten on the go.

Back home I am used to always bringing my own lunch to school. It is just too expensive to buy it in the canteen. But here it seems like it is more the norm to just buy food at school. And also, at my school, we have one canteen, but at SFSU there are like 10-15 restaurants. It is all so tempting!

Add to that the fact that people buy so much expensive coffee to go, then it certainly adds up! But I have enjoyed trying the way of things here, although I am looking forward to going home to cheaper produce and more home cooked meals. A funny thing that I also noticed is, that in this city almost everyone is always sipping on some kind of drink.

Either coffee or tea or sweet tea or coke or smoothie or an energy drink. Always always always people are drinking something. I am just used to filling up a water bottle when I am thirsty. I bought launch at one of the food places on campus and the meal just came with a can of soda. That was so strange to me! Its really really hard to avoid sugary drinks here
