Monopoly Money

Ok so, at the moment $1 = £0.6256 or 0.7203 Euros. I did not know this until I googled it about 2 minutes ago. This is not a good sign. Being in a foreign country has really taken a toll on my bank account! I seem to see every dollar I spend as just another piece of paper. It’s a completely self-inflicted problem, but I just hand over notes like they were nothing. Every time I see a price-tag, I immediately think it’s a good deal, without even beginning to work out how much it is in my head.
Before I came here, I had grand plans in my head of what I’d do, how I’d save and how much money I’d be spending. But things have definitely not gone to plan. I went to Vegas a couple of weeks ago for the weekend. I had an amazing time and the whole trip was a bargain. But when I actually realised how much I’d spent, and then compared it to my average weekend away in England, I felt a bit sick. I would never think to spend that much money on a weekend away as I wouldn’t think it was worth it. Don’t get me wrong, Vegas was definitely worth it, and I won $25, which was very exciting for me. But $25 compared to the amount I spent to win that money, pales in comparison.
The worse part is, the money here all looks the same. So handing over a $5 note feels the same as handing over a $1 note. It looks and feels like Monopoly money. I’m one step off putting money aside for a house. It’s ridiculous. I actually thought to myself the other day how easily I could rent a space and turn it into a bar or café and got way too overexcited by the prospect; until I realised every single complication, which predominantly would be my lack of money, and of course the visa regulations. Anyway, travelling is a must while we all have the chance, but from now on I’ll be looking into every form of transport to be sure I pick the cheapest. A dollar here or there is starting to bleed me dry.
