Painting The Town Orange

While many of us have been recovering from Midterms in the last few weeks, The San Francisco Giants have been battling numerous teams in the Major League Baseball ‘post-season.’ Last night they emerged victorious after sweeping away the Detroit Tigers in four straight games. Needless to say the city erupted in excitement!

I headed towards City Hall which hosted a ‘jumbatron’ screen to show the game but that had quickly filled up with 10-15,000 people in a sea of orange. Instead I went down Market Street to a bar and revelled in the shouting and screaming as Buster Posey scored a home-run only to have the Tigers level before the end of the inning. Anticipation mounted as the game passed the ninth and entered a tenth inning where Marco Scutaro pulled the game back for the Giants. You can watch the final play here as the Giants’ pitcher Sergio Romo strikes out the Tiger’s batter to win the series.

As soon as the game was won, the streets filled with people in jubilation, cars honked their horns and traffic came to a standstill. In the Castro where I was based revellers took over the 18th/Castro Street intersections to throw rolls of toilet paper into the air and passengers on the muni lines jumped up and down, shouting ‘Giants, Giants, Giants’ through the whole journey. Whilst some have claimed to have seen violent altercations, this certainly wasn’t what I witnessed which was more of a community of different backgrounds coming together in celebration.

The Giants have announced a ‘homecoming’ parade to celebrate this Wednesday (10/31) afternoon, FunCheapSF has all the details.

I previously wrote of first seeing the Giants on this blog last month.
