San Luis Obispo

Over the Labour Day weekend I went about 3 or 4 hours south of California and visited SLO also know as San Luis Obispo. It is a small college town so the place is 60% filled with college students partying it up but when school is over, the town is dead. There are parts of the drive down on the 1 and then the 101 that are scenic but sitting in a car for that long is obviously draining. School hadn’t started yet so we went during the quiet time filled with older people who actually live in the area.

Downtown is quite small you can practically explore the whole area within an hour or so but the place is just so adorable, it’s got cute little houses! I love looking at houses (my study field is interior design/architecture). There are also heaps of giant mountains that you can see, the most popular one being the Montana and Cal Poly mountains. Hiking is probably a big thing here, there’s mountains all around, why would you not go hike up them and see the city in a better angle?

I stayed there for 3 days and on the way back we drove the Big Sur. If you’re thinking of going through the Big Sur in 2 to 3 hours your wrong! It took a good 4 hours or more just to go through the whole way. There’s only 2 lanes and its definitely going to be busy no matter what so you’re driving at 40mph or 60km/h. On the way there we saw wild zebras which is very rare for them to be so close to the road as well, elephant seals, they’re a bit stinky and lounge around on the sand and most definitely saw the famous bridge we see on Instagram or Pinterest.

It was a great getaway even for 3 days just to feel more slowed down from the SF rush, although, I’m from Sydney Australia so it isn’t as busy as it is there. Being open and saying yes to events are a great way to get to explore the US more with the company of friends or even making friends for life on the way.
