Sex and the (other) city

Google search “sexuality university” and the first thing that pops up is SFSU’s minor and major in sexuality studies. The city of San Francisco has been known to be open and liberal about sex and sexuality for many years. Being born and raised in Amsterdam, this is not very different from the mindset I grew up with. Strangely enough though, the University of Amsterdam doesn’t offer many courses in sexuality studies, in fact, they only have about five. Can you imagine my joy when browsing the SFSU website while envisioning the endless possibilities of becoming a “sexpert”. This might sound a bit… strange, but from the age of about eight or nine, I knew that sexuality would be something I would long be interested in. Navigating my way trough high school and the first years of university, sexuality has always been my point of focus. And now, at the legal drinking age of twenty-two, I am in San Francisco to study the infamous minor.

When I had just arrived in “The City” (don’t ever call it Frisco, I’ve been corrected) I only had input from the people I had just met, and the things I saw in the streets. Since my courses have started, I am starting to get theoretical input as well. The things on sexuality I am experiencing here are ranging from “12 tips for healthy dating” to the “leather freak, naked butt men” (for lack of a better description) at the Folsom Street Fair. I’m sure I will have enough interesting experiences during my six months in San Francisco. In the coming months I will be blogging about sex in San Francisco and share my insights on love, relationships, sex, fetishism, homosexuality and what not.
