SF & Movies – Part 2

Hey Folks,

So here’s the second part: famous movie locations of San Francisco. There’s actually quite a business around it. Apparently you can book tours to see some of these famous spots. But why pay when you can do it for free, right? So coming up: childhood movies, blockbusters and  classics (again).

Some of the scenes from Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine were filmed at Ocean Beach, which is a nice place to see anyway. The bar where Jasmine goes on a date with her dentist’s boss is on Haight Street (1633) and the place where she takes her sister’s kids for pizza while getting her usual dose of Xanax and vodka (lovely) is in the Richmond district (5546 Geary St).

You can see Dr. Dolittle’s house on 2100 Green St, and his office at 2107 Union St, both on Webster. There are also a few shots of the Coit Tower which is really great to visit, beautiful view.

There are two locations actually filmed in SF you can visit from the Princess Diaries: Mia’s house (724 Brazil Ave on Athens St) and Mia’s high school in the Marina District (2601 Lyon St at Green St).

The Biopic Big Eyes about painter Margaret Keane’s story also takes place in SF but in the 60s. Some of the scenes were actually shot in the city but the environment was transformed a bit to fit the timeline. The Palace of Fine Arts is featured in the movie where we can see painters. Green St and Grant Ave is where the gallery is (North Beach).

Childhood favorite also filmed in San Francisco: Mrs. Doubtfire. You can see the Hillard family home at 2640 Steiner St at Broadway (Pacific Heights). You can also see Colombus Avenue in the scene where Mrs Doubtfire fends off a mugger.

There are so many movies taking place in SF that you may also know: The Pursuit of Happiness, Lone Ranger, Basic Instinct, Dirty Harry, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Vertigo, Star Trek, Terminator, the Wedding Planner…

If you are interested you can always visit this cool website which has an interactive map of film locations: http://metrocosm.com/sf-film-locations-map.html
